LOCATION OF POSITION
MDH, Spring Grove Hospital Center, Catonsville, MD
This position is assigned to the Infection Prevention and Control Department at SGHC and provides leadership to the SGHC Infection Prevention and Control Department (IP&C). Certification in Infection Control (CIC) is preferred. The main purpose is to fulfill the mission of the Infection Prevention and Control Department (IP&C) through providing leadership, direction and responsibility of the department administration and operations. This position is responsible and accountable for the following:
24/7 assessment of hospital, patient and employee IP&C needs, education/training relevant to IP&C topics and standards, communication/collaboration with other hospital departments, consultation with county and state health departments as required or situationally appropriate
Must be able to make clinically sound decisions, use rational judgment and effective verbal and written communication
Efficient typing skills and demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office software and Google Apps, and must be willing and able to be trained how to use other types of software relevant to reporting and communicating hospital IP&C information
Coordinates IP&C programs throughout the hospital, develops infection control policies/procedures/practices to ensure compliance with MDH, hospital, TJC, OSHA, CDC and CMS standards, regulations and expectations., in addition to county and other federal regulatory entities
Performs daily infection surveillance
Identifies, reports and investigates possible outbreaks and organizes resources in response to a confirmed or suspected outbreak
Swift and timely collaboration and communication with various clinical disciplines and classifications, department managers, supervisors and professional/non-professional staff
Provide infection prevention and control information, surveillance/screening, and other interventions related to prevention and control of hospital-related infection control concerns
Identify, assess, and provide recommendations for opportunities to prevent and reduce risk for nosocomial infections
Prepares various monthly, quarterly and annual reports and provides leadership in various assigned hospital and statewide committees
Conducts all renovation/construction projects and completes IP&C Risk Assessments (ICRAs) on each construction project
Performs, analyzes and evaluates and reports results of monthly infection control environmental rounds on each clinical unit with recommendations relative to plan of correction and/or improvement of processes to ensure consistency in compliance with local, state and federal standards and regulations
Performs clerical work as needed
This department represents MDH's largest and most diverse inpatient psychiatric facility and in the absence of the Director of IP&C, this position represents the agency on IP&C issues - including the responsibility of reporting infectious diseases and infection control precautions/measures taken to prevent disease transmission and contamination to appropriate internal and external agencies. This position receives general supervision from the department director, with additional direction from the Director of Somatic Services and the Chief Medical Officer (Clinical Director), in addition to administrative leadership direction from the CEO/COO. Position gives guidance and recommendations, and interfaces with all departments with regard to IP&C issues. On-call rotation requirement. Must remain up-to-date on current IP&C trends and evidenced-based practice.
Education: A Bachelor's degree in Nursing or a health-related field from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Four years of experience as a Registered Nurse to include two years in the Psychiatric option and one year in a supervisory, administrative or consultative capacity.
1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master's degree in Nursing or a health-related field from an accredited college or university and two years of experience as a Registered Nurse in the Psychiatric option for the required education and experience.
2. Candidates may substitute six years of experience as a Registered Nurse to include three years in a supervisory, administrative or teaching capacity in the Psychiatric option for the required education and experience.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Nursing classifications or Nursing and Hospital Administration specialty codes in the Nursing field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The desired candidate should possess the following:
Leadership and management in infection prevention and control, which supervises other people for Infection Control Risk Assessments, performance improvement initiatives, environmental rounds, The Joint Commission surveys, CMS surveys in a hospital setting.
Applying clinical knowledge related to health acquired infections, antibiotic stewardship, clinical patient care associated with infection prevention and control and applying current CDC guidelines and OSHA standards on infection prevention, with a variety of employee health initiatives, coordination and implementation of immunization.
Writing and revising infection prevention and control policies and procedures
Analyzing and reporting (verbal and written reports) data for quarterly, monthly and annual reports, and actively participating/collaborating in hospital committees.
Applying current evidence-based practice as related to infection prevention and control and the ability to conduct interactive training and education on infection prevention and control topics in the behavioral health setting with both patients and employees of all education levels.
Typing and utilizing Microsoft Office, and Google Applications (docs, sheets, slides).
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Registered Nurse from the Maryland State Board of Nursing, 4140 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215 or possess a current multi-state license in party states that candidates have declared as primary states of residence.
2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
