Main Purpose of Job

The purpose of this position is to provide counseling to patients with substance use disorders by using assessment, intervention, treatment and rehabilitation. The A/D Associate Counselor in this classification receives general supervision from an Alcohol and Drug Professional Counselor Supervisor or other supervisors approved by the board of Professional Counselors and Therapists. This individual supports the mission of the organization through active participation in clinical efforts to provide psychological evaluation and treatment in recovery-oriented environment.

Some job responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: 
  • Conducting Addiction Therapy and Relapse Prevention Groups and conduct psycho-educational groups regarding Mental Illness and Substance Abuse (MISA). 
  • Completing documentation on all clinical intervention. 
  • Conducting Addiction Assessments and trauma Screenings, Document requirements for treatment plans and discharge summaries. 
  • Representing Addiction, Co-Occurring and Trauma Recovery Services (ACTRS) on a treatment team(s) of a unit in the Hospital.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:     Determined by the Maryland State Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists under the requirements for Certified Associate Counselors-Alcohol and Drug.  

Experience:   Determined by the Maryland State Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists under the certification requirements for Certified Associate Counselors-Alcohol and Drug. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should possess:
  • Experience with co-occurring disorders or individuals who also have a comorbid serious persistent mental illness
  • Experience working with individuals who are court involved or in the criminal justice system

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. In accordance with Health Occupations Title 17 and Code of Maryland Regulations 10.58.07, candidates must be certified by the Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists as a Certified Associate Counselor-Alcohol and Drug.  

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.  

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

Candidates may remain on the certified eligible list for a period of at least one year. The resulting certified eligible list for this recruitment may be used for similar positions in this or other State agencies.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
