Main Purpose of Job
The Maryland State Department of Education is
seeking highly qualified candidates for the position of Assistant State
Superintendent for the Division of Educator Certification and Program Approval.
This position reports directly to the Deputy State Superintendent for School
Effectiveness and is responsible for providing leadership, management,
administration, guidance and supervision to Educator Certification and Program
Approval Initiatives.
POSITION DUTIES
Oversees the educator certification system for
the State of Maryland and implements related policies adopted by the Maryland
State Board of Education and the Professional Standards and Teacher Education Board;
Oversees the approval system for college and university preparation programs
that lead to a MSDE issued certificates; implements policies adopted by the
Maryland State Board of Education and Professional Standards and Teacher
Education Board; oversees the accreditation system for Maryland's nonpublic
schools and related policies; advises the Maryland State Board of Education and
the Professional Standards and Teacher Education Board on issues and policies
pertaining to certification and accreditation; prepares reports and presentations
for State Board of Education, State Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent; manages
and supervises Staff and addresses and resolves employee concerns.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Applicants
should possess a Master’s Degree or 36 hours of post
Baccalaureate
coursework in Education. Doctoral degree
preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Extensive
experience in educational supervision and management in the areas of, educator
credentialing, professional educator preparation program oversight, and nonpublic
school accreditation.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
This role requires strong organizational
leadership skills in order to realign the work processes, facilitate
collaboration and planning, and build a cohesive team. Extensive experience
with an emphasis in educator credentialing requirements, evaluation/assessment
of educator credentialing programs, and evaluation of nonpublic accreditation
standards and procedures.
LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION
Proof of eligibility to work in compliance with
the Immigration Reform and Control Act and travel throughout the state are
required. Any misrepresentation of
academic or experience requirements for this position may result in
