Main Purpose of Job

To make professional decisions regarding the level of impairment, the capacity for work and the vocational rehabilitation potential of disabled applicants under the Social Security Act. Efficiently process adult and initial childhood and reconsideration claims; initial continuing disability review claims.

POSITION DUTIES

Determines eligibility for Social Security Disability benefits and Supplemental Security Income Payments; secures appropriate medical, vocational and psychological documentation as required by established federal standards; provides general information about Disability Determination Services; uses medical terminology to accurately describe impairments; evaluates evidence to determine the degree and severity of disabilities in each electronic case; makes recommendations to award or deny benefits; writes determinations and defends the assessments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree.

Experience:  Professional experience in a behavioral or social science related field is preferred.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of medical/disability terminology.
  • Experience with electronic case management or a similar software program.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Individuals selected for positions with the Maryland State Department of Education's Disability Determination Service (DDS) will go through a complete Tier 2 federal background investigation.  A suitability determination by the Social Security Administration is necessary to determine whether an employee can be issued credentials in order to have access to Social Security disability data, records, and systems.
