Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position is to
institutionalize high quality service-learning in all Maryland public schools
and to encourage its application in schools across the United States. The service-learning specialist provides
technical assistance and training to local school systems, agencies in
service-learning, monitors service-learning implementation, administers
statewide programs to support service-learning such and assists her colleagues
in planning their work.
POSITION DUTIES
- Provide information on the service-learning graduation requirement daily to parents, students, teachers, community based organizations, local education agency contacts, the media and/or the general public by one or more of the following: telephone, e-mail, website, meetings and/or presentations;
- Facilitate meetings and/or trainings at least annually of service-learning leaders to enhance their service-learning knowledge and improve the quality of service-learning around the state. This position oversees the offering of online service-learning professional development opportunities.
- Promote communication about service-learning to local systems, state, and beyond through publication creation and modification.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Possession of a
Master’s Degree or equivalent 36 credit hours of post-baccalaureate course work.
EXPERIENCE: Four years of administrative or teaching
experience in, or affiliated with, an education program.
NOTES:
- Two additional years of experience directly related to the position option may be substituted for the required Master’s Degree.
- Possession of a Doctorate in a field related to the position may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
- The required field of education and experience are unique for each option and are established by MSDE in accordance with Education Article, Section 2-104 of the Annotated Code of Maryland. The specific education and experience qualifications for each position are on record in the Human Resource Management Branch of the Division of Business Services of the Department of Education.
- Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Education Program classifications or Education Program specialty codes in the Education field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.
SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS
One year of experience administering or
coordinating a service learning program or a program affiliated with services
learning.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of State and federal laws,
regulations, policies, and programs, including the Elementary and Secondary
Education Act, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and the Code of
Maryland Regulations; skill in delivering technical assistance, training, and
guidance to local school systems, and internal and external stakeholders
related to the administration and coordination of the implementation of
service-learning activities and strategies. Ability to work on multiple
projects; meet established timelines and deadlines; ability to work as a team
member; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships;
ability to provide assistance to local school systems in implementing
strategies to address the implementation of service-learning strategies; ability
to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
