Main Purpose of Job

This position is the Bureau Director for Environmental Health and is responsible for general oversight and management of the Bureau. This includes related budget tracking, activity reporting and oversight of a significant number of public health programs (i.e., Well & Septic, Food Protection and Community Hygiene) subject to the control and authorities of environmental health laws, regulations and policies. Interacts with elected officials and advises the Health Officer or Deputy Health Officer as appropriate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in biological, physical, environmental science or chemistry, and five years of experience managing environmental health programs.   

Applicants must be licensed as a Licensed Environmental Health Specialist through the Maryland State Board of Environmental Health Specialists.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Desired qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of COMAR and Howard County regulation pertaining to environmental health regulatory programs;
  • Demonstrated experience navigating regulations and providing guidance to internal and external stakeholders; and,
  • Demonstrated experience managing environmental regulatory programs.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Applicants must be licensed as a Licensed Environmental Health Specialist through the Maryland State Board of Environmental Health Specialists.

SELECTION PROCESS

This is a Management Service position, and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.  A resume must accompany your application.
