Main Purpose of Job

This position reports to the Office of Communications and Community Engagement’s Deputy Director of Media Relations, and is responsible for managing the Maryland State Department of Education’s PIA (Public Information Act) requests. This position directs and manages the processing of all PIA requests and establishes a sophisticated tracking system for tracking, responses and reporting.  

POSITION DUTIES

  • Directs and manages the processing of all PIA requests
  • Establishes a sophisticated tracking system for tracking, response and reporting.
  • Works closely with the agency’s legal team to assemble responses, including data and documents, and assesses and collects service fees
  • Reviews and redacts records to assure legal sufficiency. 
  • Coordinates PIA efforts amongst inter and intra Departmental record custodians and ancillary divisions.
  • Serves as the point of contact for the Attorney General's Office, the PIA Compliance Board and Public Access Ombudsman. 
  • Directs and manages the daily operations of the Department's PIA compliance and response effort.
  • Evaluates the Department's efficiency and compliance with PIA Requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

EXPERIENCE: Four years of administrative/professional work experience.

Note: Graduate education may be substituted for up to two years of the required work experience. Additional administrative/professional experience may be substituted year-for-year up to four years of the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

1. Experience advising and coordinating responses to Public Information Act (PIA) requests.
2. Experience with Microsoft Excel or similar tracking software.
