Introduction

Maryland Public Television, which is commonly known by its familiar name "MPT", is a public television network that comprises six television stations that broadcast throughout the entire state of Maryland as well as into the District of Columbia and parts of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. MPT is the only state-wide broadcaster in Maryland. MPT is a member of the Public Broadcasting Service.

Main Purpose of Job

This position will provide experienced, high-quality service to regional and national productions as well as non-broadcast special projects. The individual in this position will function as a multi-camera studio and/or field director and technical director as the situation warrants. This position is responsible for the 'look' of the program, timing and coordination of all technical facilities and personnel. The individual will provide non-linear editing services in both an 'off-line' and 'on-line' capacity for broadcast and non-broadcast clients. This position helps manage shared media workspaces and troubleshoots computer-based editing systems.

This is a Special Appointment position and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

POSITION DUTIES

Multi-camera directing in the studio and on location

·     Coordination of production elements, to include pre-production meetings/planning/consulting, into a product that fits the requirements of the Producer/Client and being a liaison between Producer and production personnel; 

·     Able to direct multi-camera productions live or prerecorded   

·     Communicating with talent, producers, or other personnel at "remote" (out-of-house) locations;

·    As a Technical Director, ability to operate production switchers while directing crew. You will Oversee and plan the technical aspects of a production, ensuring equipment is ready and technical checks are completed before production begins. (e.g., operating production switcher, graphics equipment, timing segments, etc.);

·     Assisting with camera settings, lens choices, equipment changes, and modifications.

On-Line editing 

·    This position requires a good work ethic and the ability to multi-task effectively. This position includes performing scheduled editing sessions on a regular basis. The Director/Editor must have strong Avid editing capabilities and be capable of utilizing all of MPT’s Avid Post Production toolset which includes Avid Symphony, Media Composer and The Adobe Creative Suite of tools. This position should demonstrate a high level of creativity under tight deadlines. The Director/Editor is expected to adhere to and demonstrate a working knowledge of PBS/FCC technical specifications. This position also interacts and shares projects and media with other editors and producers. This position will require some knowledge of and ability to encode video to various standard formats. The Producer/Editor should be able to work effectively with limited supervision in a high-pressure environment.

Troubleshooting/Training 

·     Installs new equipment, updates software, and installs upgrades/patches to computer systems used in the post-production process; 

·     Offer some training and assistance either by phone or in-person when available to producers and other editors; 

·     Monitors and regulates the shared media storage system; 

·     Creates new accounts for new editors and allocates storage and sets size and read/write limits; 

·     Performs regular cleanup of old files and monitors old workspaces, deleting out-of-date projects and files.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. 


Experience: Three (3) years of television video production experience in non-linear editing.

 

For education obtained outside the United States, you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding these qualifications. 

 

· Working knowledge of network technical specifications for program delivery. (e.g., PBS, APT,

  Discovery/Velocity, NETA, etc.);


· Experience using Sony XDCAM PDW-F1600 decks, PDW-U1/ U2 readers, or Sony HDCAM

  decks;


· Experience using Adobe Creative Cloud Software (e.g., PhotoShop, After Effects, Premiere,

  Media Encoder, etc.) Experience using Avid Plug-ins (e.g., Boris Sapphire FX, Stage Tools

  Moving Picture, NewBlue Titler Pro, etc.); 


· Experience exporting file-based videos and using transcoding software (e.g., Sorenson

  Squeeze, Media Encoder, Digital Rapids/Imagine Software Systems, etc.);  


· Experience directing in the studio and on location;


· Knowledge of multi ME production Switchers, external graphics and Still Storers;


· Ability to communicate information and ideas to others both verbally and in writing in a clear

  and concise manner;


· Ability to manage one's own time and the time of others; 


· Must be highly organized, detail-oriented, self-starter with the ability to work under pressure

  without supervision; 


· Must have the knowledge and ability to select the different camera angles and compositions.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

·        The selected candidate must be able to lift 50 lbs. or more due to the weight of the equipment.
