Main Purpose of Job

This position will support students and staff at both the Columbia and Frederick campuses to ensure the development and implementation of a bilingual educational program for Deaf students in a language accessible environment as well as to ensure the provision of an enriched bicultural environment conducive to the development of the optimal social and emotional growth of Deaf students.  This position will support the provision of a language enriched environment through the use of American Sign Language (ASL), printed word and visual supports to meet the varied needs of Deaf students throughout our school birth - 21, providing programming to help those in need of intervention.

This position will ensure equity and unbiased practices are implemented in the classroom and throughout the system of curriculum and instruction.

This will be an 11 month position.

POSITION DUTIES

Participate in the maintenance of Bilingual Education concepts and principles throughout the school. Oversee the ASL/English Framework Action Plan. Lead the selection of different bilingual curriculum materials through facilitating curriculum review committees. Develop and improve instructional/curricular materials for courses. In collaboration with others, review curricular materials for equity and bias. Enhance curricular materials to ensure diversity is reflected throughout. Create a professional development plan for bilingual pedagogy and bilingual methodology and K-12 ASL standards. Monitor the implementation of the ASL K-12 Standards. Provide feedback to teachers based on observation, and student performance data. Support the implementation of the allocation of using ASL and English in daily instruction. Implement the new teacher induction program. Support struggling teachers. Support teachers pedagogical best practices in closing the achievement gap, implementing equitable and unbiased practices. Coordinate the ASL Immersion program to support new students who have not yet acquired ASL skills. Implement some Individual Education Plan (IEP) ASL services for eligible students. Maintain the ASL resource center for staff and families. In collaboration with the Director of Academic Affairs, monitor ASL assessments and the ASL assessment program. Improve professional competence through participation in staff development activities and other professional growth opportunities. Coordinate with the Director of Curriculum and instruction, and Director of Academic Affairs to produce content for staff, students and families. Must be able to clearly explain bilingual pedagogy, and changes to the curriculum or instructional practices to teachers, principals, staff and the community.

This position reports to the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, but also works with the Director of Academic Affairs and the Director of IEP Services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor Degree with post-baccalaureate graduate credits bilingual pedagogy.

Candidates must be eligible to apply for or be willing to obtain certification by the Maryland State Department of Education within a prescribed amount of time.  Fluency in American Sign Language and written English required.  Knowledge of the Deaf culture, Deaf Education, and ability to teach students on different levels and with varying educational and language acquisition backgrounds is required. Five years of successful classroom instruction utilizing bilingual approaches.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Five years teaching experience, knowledge of the Deaf community, and Knowledge in identifying and using assessment and diagnostic tools required.  Thorough knowledge of bilingual pedagogy. Other combinations of education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered. Previous experience designing and providing professional development and mentoring teachers.
