Main Purpose of Job

This position will provide services to identify newly diagnosed HIV positive individuals through testing and working with the Disease Intervention Specialist, connect them with care as early as possible and promote treatment adherence. This position, If applicable, will share his/her own experience and strength in living successfully with HIV infection. This position will include HIV testing at the health department and in the community, participate in the development and implementation of support group agendas and facilitation of group exercises that support individuals living with HIV infection, and recruit clients for support groups. This position will work directly with HIV nurse case managers in helping HIV clients learn to manage their HIV treatment. This position will make contacts by face to face home or office visits or phone calls with HIV clients to provide treatment support. This position will develop and mail a periodic special edition newsletter to all HIV clients. This position, when not working directly with clients, will support the activities of the HIV program by working on other duties as assigned to include community outreach activities such as Health Fairs, AIDS Observances, and the Youthful Offenders Program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: None. 

Notes:  Candidates may substitute experience providing assistance to individuals in a health care or social services setting on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The preferred candidate should possess the following experience:
   -bilingual in Spanish 
   -working with individuals identified with a communicable disease in a health care, counseling, or peer support setting
   -working with public health outreach events

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
