This is seasonal work with variable hours, approximately 200 hours per season.  Contractual employees are paid for actual hours worked only.  Mileage will be reimbursed at the State of Maryland reimbursement rate (currently .585 cents per mile, subject to change) when traveling within your assigned region. This is contractual employment and does not include benefits such as leave time, holidays, or health insurance.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Maryland Department of Agriculture Headquarters - Annapolis, Maryland

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Agriculture is seeking a seasonal field aide to work as an apiary inspector. This is a part-time position (approximately 200 hours for the season) with duties within these counties of Maryland.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties will include inspection of honeybee colonies for diseases, pests, and pesticide losses, recommendations of appropriate measures for honeybee colony management and control of honeybee pests and diseases, accurate record keeping/office work as required to document inspection actions and assist with licensing activities. Work will involve interactions with the public.

Work will involve exposure to biting/stinging insects, ticks, poison ivy, high temperature and humidity and other outdoors exposure. Employees may be required to use personal protective equipment. This is contractual employment and does not include benefits such as leave time, holidays, or health insurance. Mileage will be reimbursed at the State of Maryland reimbursement rate (currently .585 cents per mile, subject to change).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidate must be at least 18 years of age.  High School Diploma or GED required.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

This is specialized work, and a thorough understanding of honey bee colonies and beekeeping programs is required to carry out inspection activities.  A minimum of three years of successful, progressively responsible experience in a practical beekeeping program or in beekeeping inspection is required.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

A driver's license valid in Maryland is required.

SELECTION PROCESS

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
