Introduction

Applications are currently being accepted for a full-time, day shift seasonal position.  This is contractual employment and employee will be paid for actual hours worked only.  Contractual paid leave and health benefits available.  On the job training will be provided.

NOTE: Hours may vary somewhat due to weather and other factors, but 40 hours/week are generally available throughout the season.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Maryland Department of Agriculture Headquarters - Annapolis, Maryland

Main Purpose of Job

This position will serve as a laboratory technician to assist in survey and detection activities for federally regulated plant pathogens. Seasonal position: June - November 2022

POSITION DUTIES

Duties will include:
  • Collection of samples of diseased plant material in the field.
  • Preparation of samples (tear, cut, weigh, grind) for laboratory testing. This involves operation of laboratory equipment such as pH meter, balance, microscope, electrophoresis, Bunsen burner, centrifuge and autoclave.
  • Accurate data collection.
  • Use of additional equipment such as GPS and personal computer.
  • Safe operation of State vehicle.
Note:  work may involve adverse weather conditions and exposure to biting/stinging insects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or GED
Minimum Age 18
Valid Driver's License with no more than 5 points on the driving record.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess any one or more of the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

  • Experience working in a laboratory.
  • Experience conducting biological field work.
  • College coursework in Biology or a related curriculum.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Driver's license valid in Maryland, with no more than 5 points on the driving record.

SELECTION PROCESS

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
