The Office of the Public Defender is seeking  a detailed oriented person with experience working with arrested persons, attorneys, law enforcement and courtroom personnel to fill a full time Public Defender Intake Specialist I vacancy within our Central Booking Bail Unit. This position will follow a hybrid work schedule which includes Monday thru Friday including Holidays  from  3-11:30 pm with alternating weekends, teleworking and on-site, as needed.

Intake Specialists work with a team and individually perform legal support tasks as directed by Supervisory staff. Experience working with computers and the ability to navigate through multiple judicial software interfaces is required to process case files to assist attorneys at Bail Hearings. Data entry of case information is required in this position as well as. Work is conducted via telework, in office and at the local court houses.

Main Purpose of Job

The Public Defender Intake Specialist I is the first interaction clients have with the Office of the Public Defender. Public Defender Intake Specialists I act as liaisons for attorneys for incarcerated individuals. They prepare case files for bail hearings and trials. They interact with court commissioners to ascertain eligibility. They interact with case managers to obtain detainee information to enter case related data in the public defender case management system. Public Defender Intake Specialist I monitor and route internal /external incarcerated client inquiries through written correspondence. Employees in this classification do not supervise.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Six months of experience interviewing persons for the purpose of obtaining and verifying background or financial information.

Notes: 

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience interviewing persons for the purpose of obtaining background or financial information on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Compliance Inspection and Support classifications or Compliance Inspection and Support specialty codes in the Inspection, Investigation, Enforcement, and Compliance field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Willing to work in a correctional facility.

* Proficiency in data entry.

* Tech savvy with computer software applications.

* Experience working with arrested persons, attorneys, law enforcement and courtroom personnel.

* Experience working with Judicial software applications.                                            

*Customer service experience and a strong interest in working with indigent defendants.

* Available to work remotely (home and office locations), holidays and weekends.

*Experience handling confidential information.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
