Introduction
This is a 12-month
position in the maintenance department of the Maryland School for the Deaf –
Columbia Campus. This position is designated as Essential Personnel.
A Maintenance Chief II
Non-Licensed is the supervisory level of stationary engineering and building
maintenance work.
Employees in this
classification supervise skilled and semi-skilled building maintenance workers.
Employees in this classification receive general supervision from the
Maintenance Supervisor or administrator.
Positions in this
classification are evaluated by using the Supplemental Standards for
Maintenance Chief/Supervisor Positions which allocates positions based on their
job function or overall supervisory responsibility.

POSITION DUTIES
The maintenance chief position is responsible for supervising maintenance staff, performing daily inspections of buildings and grounds to ensure reliability and safety of the physical plant.
Organizes, schedules,
and coordinates the technical building maintenance work and installation
services;
Inspects completed job
assignments for adherence to trade standards;
Supervises and
provides on-the-job training to semi-skilled and unskilled employees;
Interacts with vendors
to facilitate repairs to campus buildings and grounds;
Reviews and interprets
blue prints and schematics for maintenance staff for electrical and plumbing
repairs;
Coordinates building
repair processes with the Principal or the Principal’s designee to minimize
disruption of services provided and to ensure that all buildings are properly
maintained;
Adjusts, maintains,
and makes minor repairs to refrigeration and cooling equipment and other
control devices;
Prepares
specifications for the requisition of equipment, tools, parts, and supplies;
Inspects equipment,
tools, parts and supplies when received to ensure compliance with
specifications;
Inspects shop and work
areas for adherence to safety, sanitary, and security regulations;
Secures tools and
equipment;
Assists with planning
and conducting fire evacuation drills;
Keeps the maintenance
supervisor advised as to the status and condition of fleet assets;
May conduct
inventories;
Responsible to respond
as Emergency Personnel for snow removal;
Performs other related
duties.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Eighth grade.
Experience: Three years of experience in the building maintenance or building construction trades including two years of experience assigning, reviewing and approving the work of other building maintenance or building construction workers.
Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher, as a non-commissioned officer in utilities classifications or mechanical maintenance management specialty codes in utility systems repair, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be
given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s).

1. Experience with
commercial building repairs or school settings.
2. Supervisory
experience with specialty trades such as plumbing or electrical work.
3. Willingness to learn
ASL.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
New hires are subject
