Main Purpose of Job

This position serves in a 2 County Forestry Project as technical support in the areas of forest management, forest protection, urban and community forestry, law enforcement, information and education services, on private lands or lands owned by the Department, supporting the main goal of inspiring Marylanders to live in harmony with nature and to protect the Chesapeake Bay.

POSITION DUTIES

The Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service/Eastern Region, is currently accepting applications for a Natural Resource Technician I position located in Queen Anne’s County, Maryland. The technician will be stationed in the Centreville office. Services required will be performed on private lands or lands owned by the State and local governments in the areas of forest management, forest data collection, tree planting, wildlife management, forest protection, wildland fire suppression, prescribed fire, and urban and community forestry in Kent & Queen Anne’s Counties. Maintenance of equipment, as needed, and operation of the following equipment used in the above duties may apply: chainsaw, brush saws, leaf blowers, tractors, ATV’s, and other heavy equipment. Applicants must be willing and available to work evenings and/or weekends for wildland fire suppression response. The position is full-time, 40 hours/week. Applicants must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 credit hours must be in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study.

Experience: None.

Notes: 

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. 6 months of Training or 3 credit hours of Coursework in riparian buffer planting.
2. 6 months of Training or 3 credit hours of Coursework in geographic information systems (GIS).
3. 6 months of Training or 3 credit hours of Coursework in forestry data collection.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
