Introduction

This position requires shift work of all three shifts, weekends, and holidays.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of the job is to screen every firearm related case for federal, state, county, and local law enforcement agencies. Ensure that the investigation is complete, the defendant is properly charged, the prosecutor to is prepared to aggressively prosecute the matter and the defendant is held accountable for his/actions.

POSITION DUTIES

· Answer calls, emails and other correspondence concerning gun offenders and gun crimes.

· Query, interpret and apply a wide variety of databases to include:

o METERS/NCIC

o Maryland Criminal Justice Information System

o Law Enforcement Information Exchange (LINX)

o Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) eTrace System

o Regional Automated Property Information Database (RAPID)

o Maryland Department of Juvenile Services ASSIST database

o Licensing Portal

o TransUnion TLOxp

o Maryland Judiciary Case Search

o Secure Maryland Judiciary Case Search (JPortal)

o Judicial Information Systems (JIS)

· Create, update, search track and maintain unit database and other records, ledgers and files.

· Identify firearms such as handguns (pistols and revolvers), regulated firearms, shotguns, rifles, short barreled shotguns, short barreled rifles, machine guns, assault pistols, assault weapons, silencers, etc. as those terms are defined in state and federal laws.

· Identify violations of state and federal firearm laws, recommend appropriate criminal firearm charges, ensure and guide.

· This position requires shift work of all three shifts, weekends and holidays.

· Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university for one year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from a college or university for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1.    Have experience in law enforcement or law enforcement officer to include knowledge of Maryland Gun Laws.

 

2. Have experience with gun case investigations.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SELECTION PROCESS

Only candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be considered for this classification.  Therefore, it is essential that you provide complete and accurate information on your application. Successful candidates will be place on the Eligible List categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED OR QUALIFIED and remain eligible for consideration for at least one year from the date of examination. The list will be used by the hiring manager to select employees.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position. You may be required to complete a qualifications supplement, or the rating may be based on your application. Report all experience and education that is related to this position. Applicants may be given a physical examination and will be subject to an interview, background investigation, polygraph examination and substance abuse testing.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employees and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
