Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Health (MDH)'s Prevention and Health Promotion Administration (PHPA)'s mission is to improve the health of Marylanders by reducing the transmission of infectious diseases; helping impacted people live longer and healthier lives; and, protecting individuals and communities from environmental health hazards. The Infectious Disease Bureau (IDB) works in partnership with Local Health Departments (LHDs), providers, community-based organizations, and public and private sector agencies, in order to provide public health leadership in the prevention, control, monitoring, and treatment of infectious diseases and environmental health hazards.

The mission of the Center for TB Control and Prevention is to control the spread of tuberculosis in Maryland; prevent new infections; and, increase the access to care and treatment for people who are diagnosed with tuberculosis. This position will be responsible for managing the Statewide tuberculosis database for the Center for TB Control and Prevention. This position will also be responsible for the collection, compilation, and general analysis of tuberculosis data on TB cases, as well as on immigrants and refugees who present a high risk of TB. 

This position will be the primary contact with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), regarding monthly data summaries. In addition, this position will be the primary liaison with LHDs, out-of-state health departments, and reporting laboratories, in regards to TB cases and individuals with latent TB infection (LTBI). Furthermore, this position will serve as a TB surveillance authority within the Center and work with other Center staff members to develop appropriate policies and procedures regarding surveillance data management. 

Finally, this position will function as the primary surveillance contact point to CDC and adhere to State and national laws, as well as to guidelines and standards specific to data security, patient confidentiality, and electronic data management. This position will also serves as the CDC focal point for program evaluation activities, while remaining apprised of current literature and issues in these areas of investigation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Master’s degree in the field of Public Health from an accredited college or university, with a minimum of three graduate courses in Epidemiology and one graduate course in Biostatistics.

Experience: Two years of experience in designing and conducting epidemiological studies and investigations for disease surveillance as an Epidemiologist, after receipt of the Master’s degree.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a Commissioned Officer in Health Care Science classifications, or Clinical Lab, Medical Scientists or Bio Medical Lab Officer specialty codes in the health research field of work, on a year-for-year basis, for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should have previous professional experience with tuberculosis. He/she should also have experience with disease surveillance and/or data management.
