Main Purpose of Job

Within the Maryland Department of Health (MDH)’s Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control (CCDPC), the BRFSS and Data Team supports the development and implementation of effective chronic disease prevention and control programs by serving as a respected source of information and guidance for all data-related needs. As a member of this team, the main purpose of this full-time contractual position is to support State and local initiatives which are related to the prevention of excessive alcohol use. Such support will be provided by providing high quality surveillance and statistical data analysis.

This position will provide programmatic and budget oversight, as well as surveillance system expertise and data analysis. This position will also assess population health statuses, trends and disparities. Additionally, this position will be responsible for communicating data to a variety of audiences through a variety of formats, including reports, presentations, and other documents.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Master’s degree in the field of Public Health from an accredited college or university, with a minimum of three graduate courses in Epidemiology and one graduate course in Biostatistics.

Experience: Two years of experience in designing and conducting epidemiological studies and investigations for disease surveillance as an Epidemiologist, after receipt of the Master’s degree.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a Commissioned Officer in Health Care Science classifications or Clinical Lab, Medical Scientists or Bio Medical Lab Officer specialty codes in the health research field of work, on a year-for-year basis, for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should have experience using the SAS Analytics software. He/she should also have professional experience managing a public health program(s).

Candidates may remain on the certified eligible list for a period of at least one year. The resulting certified eligible list for this recruitment may be used for similar positions in this, or other, State agencies.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract, and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. 

You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12-month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
