LOCATION OF POSITION

This position is with the Maryland Department of General Services, Maryland Capitol Police, with positions located in Baltimore City and Annapolis, Maryland.

Main Purpose of Job

The Building Security Officer II is the full performance level of work responsible for protecting the safety and security of persons, equipment and facilities at the Annapolis or Baltimore State Office Complexes. This is an emergency essential position subject to emergency release procedures. Employees may be assigned to day, evening, night or rotating shifts which may include holidays and weekends. Employees may be subject to call- in and overtime based on staffing needs and may be required to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Employees in this position must be willing and available for duty at all hours, day or night, and are required to remain or report for duty at all hours as needed to maintain the continuous operation of this agency. If you are the selected candidate for this position, you will be required to complete a Pre-Employment Physical, which will assess your ability to safely perform the essential functions of this position.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties for the Building Security Officer II position include, but are not limited to: 

-Observe and report incidents to minimize loss or damage to property and equipment. 

-Recognize and report, incidents or malfunctions which would endanger the safety of occupants, to DGS-MCP communications as they are observed or have knowledge of.

- Perform fire, light and security checks by patrolling and observing, both inside and outside of assigned facility, to recognize hazards, as or before they occur. 

-Act in a courteous and helpful manner when screening employees and visitors while presenting a positive image of the State of Maryland, the Department of General Services, and the Maryland Capitol Police.

-Report the presence of suspicious persons and those who are determined not to have official business on State property to prevent unauthorized entry into facilities. 

-Read, comprehend, and adhere to all DGS-MCP Standard Operating Procedures, Rules of Conduct, Executive Orders, Administrative Orders, and the laws of the State of Maryland in order to function efficiently and effectively each and every day. 

-Staff crosswalk positions allowing employees and visitors the ability to safely navigate streets in and around state facilities. 

-May be assigned to post(s) that require the understanding or ability to operate x-ray machines, metal detectors, solar vehicle, bicycle, Segway, etc. 

-Other functions that may be required that enable this agency to fulfill its government mission which is to provide law enforcement and physical security to the Department of General Services owned and managed property.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Ability to read and write.

Experience: Two years of experience in building security work.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Master-At-Arms classifications or law enforcement specialty codes in the site security field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification are subject to call 24 hours a day and, therefore, will be required to provide the employer with a telephone number where they can be reached.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 06.01.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

SELECTION PROCESS

The examination for this position will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position.  Successful candidates will be placed on the employment eligibility list categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED, or QUALIFIED.  The eligibility list will be valid for one year and may be extended.  The list will be used by the hiring authority to select employees for interviews.  Eligible lists may be used to fill future vacancies of the same classification.


You MUST possess the minimum qualifications before you may be selected for a State job – verification will be completed upon hire.  If you are scheduled to complete an educational or licensing requirement within six months of being placed on the eligibility list, you may participate in the selection process.  Permanent State employees may also complete necessary experience requirements within six months of the date of being placed on an eligibility list.  


Please note, selected candidates may be required to complete and successfully pass a State and Federal fingerprint background check prior to being hired.
