Main Purpose of Job

To provide and oversee comprehensive dental services to youth at the Cheltenham Youth Detention Center (CYDC), to function as part of a health team providing interdisciplinary care to detained youth, to supervise dental support staff at the facility, and to support the DJS Medical Director in performing continuous quality improvement practices and developing policies and procedures related to dental services in DJS facilities.

POSITION DUTIES

Clinical: Provide comprehensive dental care to DJS youth at CYDC 


Perform preventative dental care. 

§  Perform oral examinations, cleanings, prophylaxis procedures, and oral hygiene instruction with goal of completing the oral examination within 30 days of admission. 


§  Perform follow-up preventative oral examinations every 6 months for youth remaining in DJS care for prolonged periods. 

Review past dental records of youth and maintain current dental records by 

  • appropriately documenting each youth's dental history, oral examination, assessment/diagnosis, treatment plan, and orders.

Provide treatment for acute and chronic dental conditions 


§  Perform x-rays, routine restorations, extractions, anterior root canals, and when necessary crowns, partial dentures, dentures, bridges, and replacement for absent anterior teeth. 

 

§  Determine the need and prescribe medication for pain control and treatment of infection for oral health related problems. 

 

§  Refer youth to dental care in the community for dental needs that cannot be provided on-site 


Program Administration and Management at CYDC 


§  Ensure that DJS is following Regulatory Guidelines for Dental Radiation Machines by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MOE) Radiological Health Program;

 

§  Supervise dental support staff;

 

§  Maintain all dental equipment and supplies. 


Program Administration and Management for DJS Statewide  


Assist DJS Medical Director and Health Administrator with: 

§  quality assurance regarding provision of dental care to youth at DJS facilities, 

 

§  expansion of on-site dental services at other DJS facilities, and; 

 

§  training DJS health staff how to perform dental screening examinations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Determined by the State Board of Dental Examiners under the licensing requirements for Dentists.

Experience: Three years of experience in the practice of dentistry with two years of the required experience in an institutional setting or a public health program.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute possession of a Master’s degree in Public Health for one year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Dental Officer classifications or Dental Corpsman or Officer specialty codes in the dental field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

The required three years of experience in the practice of dentistry must be post-dental school.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.
  • More than three years post dental school experience in an institutional setting or a public health program.

  • At least one year of experience in the practice of pediatric dentistry working with adolescents.

  • Experience with digital x-ray systems, quality assurance/improvement activities, and creating/planning and maintaining dental suites.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Dentist from the State Board of Dental Examiners, 4201 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215-2299.

2. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess or be eligible to obtain controlled substances registration certificates issued by the federal government and the State of Maryland in order to prescribe narcotic medication.

3. Employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete training in and maintain current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Applicants for this classification may be given a medical examination prior to appointment to determine their ability to perform the work of the position.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 06.01.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
