Introduction

The Maryland Department of the Environment is seeking applicants to fill an Internal Auditor Trainee position within the Internal Audit Services/Office of Secretary.  This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of the Environment.  This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies for this position/function only.  The resulting cert list will be maintained for one year.  Persons interested in future vacancies within this classification must re-apply.

Main Purpose of Job

The Internal Auditor Trainee is a trainee level position. The incumbent in this position will learn to perform audit fieldwork and a full range of fact-finding assignments including financial, compliance, and efficiency reviews to ensure the Maryland Department of the Environment achieves its strategic objectives.

The Internal Auditor Trainee duties includes, but not limited to: 

  • Reviewing financial and operational transactions, documents, and records to obtain facts; 
  • Preparing work papers to documents audit findings; 
  • Assisting in audits for automated data processing systems;  
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with operational personnel and colleagues.
  • Preparing statistical tables and charts, financial summaries, schedules, workflow charts, staff patterns, and organizational charts; and 
  • Evaluating the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  A Bachelor's degree in accounting from an accredited college or university or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with 30 credit hours in accounting and related courses, including or supplemented by 3 credit hours in auditing.

Experience: None.

Note: Applicants who have met the requirements for admission to the CPA examination prior to July 1,1974 will be considered to have met the educational requirement referenced above.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties may be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be placed on the Eligible List categorized as BEST QUALIFIED. For education obtained outside the U.S., any job offer will be contingent on the candidate providing an evaluation for equivalency by a foreign credential evaluation service prior to starting employment (and may be requested prior to interview).
