Introduction

The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) is the state agency dedicated to preserving and interpreting the legacy of Maryland’s past.  Through research, conservation and education, MHT assists the people of Maryland in understanding their historical and cultural heritage.  Part of the Maryland Department of Planning, the Maryland Historical Trust serves as Maryland’s State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) pursuant to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to assist in the administration of the National Register of Historic Places program at the state level. This position is assigned to the Architectural Research Unit in the Office of Research, Survey and Registration and works directly with agency-wide analysis of historic and cultural properties with regard to their level of significance, condition, and preservation potential. The position directly supports the Agency mission of studying, evaluating, protecting, and interpreting the state’s historic sites, structures, districts, and cultural traditions.

POSITION DUTIES

Assists in administration of the National Register of Historic Places program at the state level.

 

Prepares National Register nomination documentation; reviews and edits documentation prepared by others.  Conducts technical review of incoming National Register nominations and final review of nominations prior to submittal to the National Park Service.

 

Coordinates review of proposed National Register nominations by Certified Local Governments and by the Governor’s Consulting Committee on the National Register.

 

Explains and interprets the National Register program to the public, and to representatives of federal, state, and local government agencies.  Advises preparers of National Register nominations. Contributes to the development of informational materials.

 

Conducts public presentations and workshops on the National Register and associated programs.

 

Oversees grants related to evaluation and registration activities throughout the state, including the selection of grants, project development, hiring, training, and supervision of consultants. Assists in writing grant applications related to evaluation and registration. Provides professional review of Certified Local Government grant projects with evaluation component to adherence to National Park Service standards.

 

Provides evaluation and registration-related assistance to State, federal, and local governments, preservation advocacy groups and non-profit organizations, and the general public.

 

Leads MHT’s coordination with the Maryland Department of Transportation to undertake responsibilities related to the Roadside Historical Markers Program, including review of accepted applications and provide comments and recommendations, manage the program’s searchable database with MHT’s website manager, and curation of hard copies of application materials. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, American Studies, Public History, or other closely related field.

 

Experience: Two years of professional experience in one of the above fields.

 

Notes: Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  A Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, American Studies, Public History, or closely related field.

 

Experience: At least one year of professional experience in architectural field survey, scholarly research, and the preparation of National Register nominations.

 

                 Knowledge or experience in historic architecture, building analysis, and investigation/documentation methods.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
