Introduction

The Maryland Historical Trust is the state agency dedicated to preserving and interpreting the legacy of Maryland’s past. Through research, conservation and education, the Maryland Historical Trust assists the people of Maryland in understanding their historical and cultural heritage. Part of the Maryland Department of Planning, the Maryland Historical Trust serves as Maryland’s State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) pursuant to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966.

The Maryland Heritage Areas Program is governed by the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority (MHAA) and administered by the Maryland Historical Trust within the Office of Planning, Education and Outreach. MHAA provides targeted financial and technical assistance within thirteen locally designated Heritage Areas, each of which has a distinct focus or theme that represents a unique aspect of Maryland’s character.

POSITION DUTIES

The main purpose of this position is to provide support to MHT and MHAA programs by assisting with many of our public-facing activities, including constituent outreach and engagement, educational programs, social media, reports, marketing materials, the annual Maryland Preservation Awards, and the statewide preservation plan. The position also provides logistical and administrative assistance to the Office of Preservation, Education, and Outreach, which may include assistance with grants processing as required.

Assist with on- and off-site and online outreach activities, meetings, and events, including scheduling, logistics, live streaming, and presenting information about MHT’s programs

Create social media posts and develop online content

Create marketing materials

Format reports and other documents

Assist with the MHT Board of Trustees’ Maryland Preservation Awards, including developing the nomination and brochure, compiling materials for Board review, and assisting with logistics and implementation of award events

Assist with the development and production of the statewide preservation plan

Assist with grants processing as required

Provide logistical and administrative support for the Office of Preservation, Education, and Outreach

Additional duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: One year of experience in administrative or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in administrative staff or professional work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included regular use of independent judgement and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Communications, Marketing, Design, Anthropology, Archaeology, Folklore, History, Historic Preservation, Architecture, Architectural History, Museum Studies, Planning, Public History, or other closely related field.

Experience developing and producing written and visual content related to history, heritage tourism, architecture, archaeology, cultural heritage, or related subjects.

Experience hosting events and managing event logistics.

Experience with producing marketing materials and formatting documents using desktop publishing software such as Adobe InDesign.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
