Main Purpose of Job

The Director of Environmental Health is responsible for protecting the public health by directing the Environmental Health Program of the County. This preventative work is done through administration and enforcement of all applicable state and county laws and by educating the public in the necessity of environmental regulations. This helps the Garrett County Health Department meet the mission of promoting and assuring the environmental health through education, regulation and disease prevention. The Director also works with community partners to develop the resources needed to address the environmental concerns of the community.


Qualified candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in biological, physical, environmental science or chemistry, and six years of experience involving inspections and investigations in the field of environmental health or closely related environmental health experience, including two years in a supervisory capacity.

A master’s degree in Public Health or Environmental Health Science can substitute for one-year non-supervisory experience.


Candidates for positions in this classification must possess and maintain a current license or be eligible to obtain licensure as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist from the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists.  A copy of your license or license number and expiration date must accompany your application.


This is a Management Service position, and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.  A resume must accompany your application.
