Main Purpose of Job

Supervise the activities of the School Facilities Architects in the School Facilities Branch and provide guidance in the conduct of the architects’ design reviews and evaluations of funding requests. Review design submissions and funding requests for their own assigned school systems. Assist in the development of facilities guidelines. Coordinate the Branch’s work on the Nonpublic Aging Schools Program with the Administrative Officer and Branch Chief. Represent the Branch when the Branch Chief is unavailable. Provide other technical assistance as needed to other divisions of MSDE, member agencies of the Interagency Commission on School Construction, other State agencies, and State and local leadership.

POSITION DUTIES

For locally funded or forward funded school construction projects costing more than $350,000 in accordance with Education Article 2-303(f) Powers and Duties (of the State Superintendent of Schools) and COMAR 13A.01.02.03, Approval of Construction Plans; Review and comment on educational specifications and feasibility studies. Review and recommend approval or disapproval to the State Superintendent of schematic design, design development, construction document, contract award, and contract change order submissions. Advise the School Facilities Branch Chief, the Deputy Superintendent for Operations, and the State Superintendent of Schools on school construction issues.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: A Master’s Degree or equivalent 36 post-baccalaureate credit hours of course work in Architecture from an accredited college or university 

EXPERIENCE: Four (4) years of experience as a licensed professional architect in the design of major institutional buildings are required 

NOTES: A Bachelor’s in Architecture and two years of additional experience as defined above may be substituted for the Master’s in Architecture.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a current license as a professional architect in Maryland or in a state with comparable requirements is required.
