Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Human Services (DHS), in cooperation with the Wicomico County Government, seeks a strong administrator to direct all program activities of the Wicomico County Department of Social Services (DSS) including Child Welfare, Family and Adult Services, Financial Assistance Programs, Nutrition Assistance, and Child Support. The Wicomico County DSS, located in Salisbury, MD has a staff of approximately 158 and a $12.3 million operating budget.

Wicomico County, located on the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland, is a progressive, mixed urban/rural county with major employer, a regional hospital complex, and two institutions of higher learning. With a population of approximately 103,980 and a median household income of $60,000, it is considered the “Crossroad of Delmarva”.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must have a Master’s Degree in Social Work or a related field, which may include Human Services Administration, Health, Education, Psychology, Sociology, Business Administration, Public Administration, and other Human Services related degrees with at least five years of professional employment in social services administration or supervision.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Desired qualifications include, but are not limited to: 

  • Strong leadership and management skills, particularly in fiscal and human resource management.
  • Ability to implement change, motivate staff and maintain relationships. 
  • Ability to acquire new funding from non-traditional sources.  
  • Strong communication skills.

Personal Leave - new State employees are awarded six (6) personnel days annually (prorated based on start date).
