Introduction

Maryland Public Television, commonly known as MPT, is a public television network that broadcasts throughout the entire state of Maryland and the District of Columbia and into parts of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. MPT is Maryland's only statewide broadcaster. Headquartered in Owings Mills, MPT is a member of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and is a producer of both locally and nationally distributed TV programs and digital content.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose is to provide support for MPT's Broadcast Operations, be it in production, Master Control or technical support for any internal and external functions. Also including the training of staff throughout the facility on new equipment operations.

This is a Special Appointment position, and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

POSITION DUTIES

Repair and maintain broadcast equipment to FCC and manufacturers specifications.

Troubleshoot and repair technical problems to a component level.

Provide expert advice and make recommendations to engineering management concerning new equipment or upgrades for MPT.

Operate remote live units and satellite uplink within technical operating standards.

Ensure adherence to OSHA requirements for safety.

Ensure staff training and compliance with procedures and use of equipment to avoid injury and equipment damage.

Modify, install and maintain systems throughout the facilities.

Maintain and operate remote live units and fixed satellite uplink.

Maintain a clean and safe work environment.

Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

 

Experience: Five years of broadcast experience which includes maintenance and repair of electronic communications equipment, design, and troubleshooting of systems and component levels.

Note:

1. Candidates may substitute an additional four (4) years of the required experience for the required education.


2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Electronics Technician (Communications) classifications or Signal Corps, Aerospace Maintenance, or Data/ Communications Maintenance specialty codes in the aviation communications field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications. 


A Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical Engineering

Federal Communications Commission license and/or related certificate

Broadcast experience is preferred

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Applicants for this classification may be required to possess either a Federal Communications Commission General Radiotelephone Operator license, a FCC Ship Radar Endorsement, a National Association of Business and Educational Radio certificate, or an Associated Public Safety Communications Officer Incorporated certificate. If required, the applicant must list their license or certificate number and expiration date on the application.

 

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

This position may require a flexible work schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays. 

This position may require working outside in unfavorable or harsh weather conditions that might include exposure to the sun, wind, water, etc. 

This position may include long periods of walking, standing, climbing, and maneuvering in and around tight spaces. 

The selected candidate will be required to lift equipment in excess of 50 pounds.

The selected candidate may be required to climb ladders and use motorized lifts in order to operate and install in-studio lights.
