Main Purpose of Job

The Assistant Toxicologist Post Mortem, Non-Board Certified will assist the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in determining cause and manner of death by conducting tests for toxic substances in biological specimens submitted by medical examiners.

Job duties include:

  • Perform laboratory testing in forensic toxicology at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to assist in investigation to establish the cause and manner of death
  • Accession and maintain chain of custody for specimens received in postmortem cases
  • Analyze postmortem specimens by immunoassay
  • Extract postmortem specimens for therapeutic and abused drugs and analyze by gas chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry
  • Test postmortem specimens for volatiles and carbon monoxide by gas chromatography and spectrophotometry

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates must possess a M.S. or Ph.D. from an accredited college or university in Chemistry, Toxicology, Pharmacology or other appropriate science from an accredited college or university 

OR 

B.S. degree from an accredited college or university in Chemistry, Toxicology, Pharmacology or other appropriate science from an accredited college or university and 2 years of experience in forensic toxicology.

This is a Special Appointment position, and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.  A resume must accompany your application.
