The Maryland School
for the Deaf (MSD) is a diverse, bilingual community who in partnership with

Main Purpose of Job
The PE Teacher will
provide to students of varying age and ability a physical education following
curricular and state standards in a safe and inclusive environment. This
includes the teaching or co-teaching of classes and the assessment and
documentation of student progress. PE teachers also have varying roles in
supporting the after-school athletics program.
POSITION DUTIES
Organize lessons and classes that align with
MSD’s adopted PE Curriculum and that promote age-appropriate physical activity
among children and young adults from kindergarten to high school.
Create and maintain a classroom conducive to
learning based on student assessments and data using the best practices of
bilingual pedagogy and differentiated instruction.
Utilize effective classroom management for
optimal learning including managing student behavior; model appropriate
behavior and promote self-control.
Develop motor skills and physical development
among younger children and proper exercise and eating habits among older
children.
Teach skills that students will need to
participate in physical activity outside of the physical education class and
skills students will need for a lifetime of physical activity.
Observe and inform students of corrective
measures necessary for skill and improvement.
Adjust the curricula to adapt to children with
different levels of physical and cognitive ability.
Teach cognitive concepts about motor skills
and fitness.
Explain and enforce safety rules governing
sports, recreational activities, and the use of sports and exercise equipment.
Teach age-appropriate Health units and classes
that include sex education and drug awareness.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education or
related field with at least 30 credit hours in PE
Experience:
Experience working with Deaf and hard of
hearing students
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
Experience working
with Deaf and hard of hearing students with multiple disabilities, including
Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disability.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Must possess or be eligible for certification
as a teacher by the Maryland State Department of Education.
New hires are subject to a criminal background

BENEFITS
Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
