MDH/Prevention and Health Promotion Administration, Office of Food Protection/Center for Food Processing, Baltimore, Maryland

Main Purpose of Job

This position will implement, direct, coordinate, evaluate, and provide leadership in food protection. This position will also provide leadership with the dissemination of knowledge regarding food processing and community service programs to the general public, as well as to those within the food manufacturing industry.

Through the supervision of Section Heads and Standardization Officers, this position will administer the Food Processing and Shellfish Programs. This position will develop policy recommendations, regulations and guidelines for the Food Processing Programs, in order to protect the public health. 

This position will also act as a spokesperson and liaison for the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) regarding food processing issues at the local, State, and federal levels. This position will respond to official correspondence and administer both the Manufactured Food Regulatory Program Standards agreement and the FDA Food Contract Cooperative agreement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, including 30 credit hours in Engineering or in the Biological, Environmental, or Physical Sciences.

Experience: Three years of experience supervising a professional staff, or as a Project Supervisor, in the general field of work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in Engineering, Public Administration, or Law, as related to environmental health, on a year-for-year basis, for the required education.

2. Applicants may substitute registration as an Environmental Sanitarian, or as a Professional Engineer, for the required education.

3. Applicants may substitute one additional year of experience in Engineering, Public Administration, or Law, as related to environmental health, for the 30 credit hours of required education.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer, or higher, as a Commissioned Officer in Environmental Engineering and Natural Resources classifications, or Environmental Engineering and Natural Resources specialty codes in the Engineering, Natural Resources, and Science field of work, on a year-for-year basis, for the required education and experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should have experience collaborating with State, local, and/or federal agencies, legislators, and/or managers of regulated industries. The desired candidate should also have experience navigating, utilizing and/or interpreting different types of databases and reports, including lab results, inspection reports, and statistical data.

Additionally, the desired candidate should be knowledgeable of the federal and State organizational structure for shellfish and manufactured food, as well as be knowledgeable of the shellfish and food manufacturing industry operations.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates appointed to positions in these classifications may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
