POSITION DUTIES
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Monitoring and Non-Tidal Assessment Division(MANTA) is currently accepting applications for multiple seasonal Natural Resources Technician I positions. The selected candidates may assist with monitoring and reporting on stream sampling efforts as part of the Maryland Biological Stream Survey (MBSS) and participate in other field studies as assigned. The selected candidates may assist with the collection of water quality data in both tidal and non-tidal rivers of Maryland, the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland’s Coastal Bays and Deep Creek Lake. Primary duties include measuring stream and storm flow, sampling for fish and benthic macroinvertebrates, tracking and compiling monitoring data, assisting with the preparation of interpretive reports, and data entry. Sampling may be conducted from boats, bridges, piers and within streams. Duties may also include processing and identification of benthic macroinvertebrate samples, maintaining and calibrating water quality sampling equipment, preparation of sampling/ laboratory supplies, developing and producing maps and other graphics for use by management related to MANTA stream monitoring programs, conducting data verification and analysis, delivery of samples to the laboratory and other duties as assigned.
Candidates must be willing to work long and flexible hours aboard boats, from bridges, and in streams, under various weather conditions. Candidates for some positions may be required to be on call for weekend storm sampling. This position may require carrying heavy equipment over rough and uneven terrain; candidates must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs. This position will also be responsible for operating a large vehicle (van or truck) around the State of Maryland. Employees will likely encounter hot weather, biting insects, long hikes, briars, and snakes. Candidates must provide their own transportation to meet a field crew prior to traveling to sites.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Two years of experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture,
wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries.

1. Candidates may substitute the completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 credit
hours must be in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study for the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the
natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to adhere to sampling protocols and accurately record data
- Ability to work independently and with others to efficiently complete assigned tasks
- Ability to effectively use Microsoft Access, Excel and Word
- Familiarity with water quality instrumentation
- Familiarity with stream restoration efforts and best management practices
- Familiarity with spatial (ArcGIS) software
- Familiarity with stream biological sampling techniques
- Familiarity with benthic macroinvertebrates
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Persons in this position may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

BENEFITS
Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
