Main Purpose of Job

The Forest Pest Management Program is seeking seasonal employees to assist with the emerald ash borer biocontrol & suppression activities, fall and spring hemlock woolly adelgid suppression activities, spongy moth suppression & egg mass surveys, and other forest pest projects as assigned between September 2023 and June 2024. Work will be in forested and urban areas.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties will include:
  • Contact with the public and recording data.  
  • Application of systemic insecticides to ash and hemlock trees.  
  • Work may involve exposure to insects, ticks, poison ivy, and forest and urban animals, lengthy hikes, working in steep and rocky areas, and carrying packs, supplies and equipment.  
  • Overnight travel may be required, for up to a week at a time.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or GED required. Each candidate must be at least 18 years of age and possess a driver's license valid in Maryland, with no more than 5 points on the candidate's driving record.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess college coursework in Biology, or experience conducting field surveys involving insects or plants. Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualfications. (Note: while this experience is preferrred, it is NOT required. On the job training will be provided.)

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Valid Driver's License required, with no more than 5 points on driving record.

SELECTION PROCESS

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
