Introduction

The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT), an agency of the Maryland Department of Planning, is seeking to hire a full time Patterson Administrator and Director of Marketing for the Patterson Center at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM). Located on 560 scenic acres along the Patuxent River in Calvert County, Maryland, JPPM is home to over 65 archaeological sites, more than 30 historic buildings and structures, and the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory. JPPM supports the preservation of Maryland's cultural and natural resources and connects people to the past through the preservation and interpretation of our onsite historical and archaeological resources. www.jefpat.maryland.gov

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of the Patterson Administrator and Director of Marketing is to coordinate the various usages of the Patterson Center; to oversee marketing strategies, plans, and campaigns for the center and JPPM as a whole; and to develop community relationships and partnerships that further JPPM’s mission and goals. By ensuring that the Patterson Center is utilized appropriately and realizes its potential, that the Patterson Center and JPPM are marketed cohesively, and that community and partner needs are served, this position supports the Maryland Historical Trust’s mission to preserve and interpret the legacy of Maryland’s past.

POSITION DUTIES

Patterson Center Administration
Coordinates with JPPM administration and departmental units the usage of the Patterson Center between education and public programs, private rental events, development activities, and other operational demands. Works with JPPM administration, JPPM Curator, JPPM Horticulturist, Patterson Educator, Events Manager, facilities staff, and other pertinent staff to create policies and procedures that ensure responsible use and appropriate maintenance of the historic structures, Patterson Collections, and landscape. Helps monitor the Patterson Center’s collections, furnishing, buildings and surrounding landscape for general upkeep needs, infrastructure problems, and other facilities or public safety concerns. Oversees the development and implementation by the Events Manager of revenue generation activities that use the Patterson Center and other locations at JPPM. Develops, plans, implements, and evaluates JPPM’s marketing and promotion efforts. This includes the direct supervision of the Outreach Coordinator and the Events Manager along with coordination of marketing efforts with JPPM administration, program heads, the Public Services Coordinator, and JPPM maintenance staff, as well as MHT and MDP staff. Develops JPPM’s advertising strategy to promote the site as a heritage tourism destination and coordinates efforts with other heritage tourism sites, organizations, and museum networks. This includes the creation of an annual marketing plan that meets the site’s needs and is responsive to the analysis of visitor feedback and digital data. Coordinates digital and print material layout, design, and media scheduling. Creates all JPPM marketing materials which includes press releases, brochures, posters, mailers, billboards, other print media, marketing emails, social media campaigns, and other digital media. Oversees the Outreach Coordinator in conducting regular visitor surveys, the evaluation of social media and website use metrics, and the analysis of marketing and visitor survey data. Develops a JPPM brand identity and implements a general site-wide branding strategy. Works with other JPPM departments during program development for heritage tourism and marketing needs, including research, interpretation, and exhibitions / collections work as well as educational programming and tour content. Oversees the Events Manager in developing a marketing strategy that promotes the site for revenue generating events. This includes the creation of an annual marketing plan that is specific to the local and regional market associated with private rentals and similar events. Maintains database of media contacts. Edits and maintains the JPPM website and online public calendar of events in conjunction with the Outreach Coordinator and other departments. Develops JPPM’s social media and outreach strategy in conjunction with Outreach Coordinator and other departments. Oversees implementation of the strategy by the Outreach Coordinator. Coordinates with JPPM administration, departmental units, and the Outreach Coordinator on development of interpretive content, images, and videos appropriate for sharing with the public. Develops and administers the overall budget for marketing, special JPPM events,  and development and community relationship activities. Coordinates execution and oversight of the budgets with the JPPM Business Manager, the Executive Director, and the Friends of JPPM as appropriate. Oversees the Events Manager in regards to the budget associated with special JPPM events, private events, and other revenue producing activities. Maintains an understanding of budget constraints and operates with proper fiscal parameters, following all policies and procedures. Assists with JPPM’s public programs and special events, participates in meetings as part of the JPPM senior staff, serves on program-related committees, and fulfills such other duties as assigned. 

Community Partnerships 
Actively seeks to develop community partnerships and build relationships with local organizations. Assists the Executive Director in fundraising efforts and the identification of grants, sponsorship, and revenue generation opportunities that are compatible with JPPM’s mission. Serves as the JPPM liaison with Calvert Tourism, the Maryland Office of Tourism, and other relevant organizations. Oversees the development of a volunteer program, recruitment and retention of volunteers, and management of volunteer tasks, by the Outreach Coordinator. Conducts offsite outreach activities to promote and support JPPM activities and oversees the Outreach Coordinator in same. Maintains database of vendors, program and event participants, community supporters, and similar contact lists

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Five years of administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and one year of experience in administrative staff or professional work for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for- year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Desired Qualifications;

The Preferred Candidate should possess the following:

Bachelor’s degree in communication, museum studies, historic preservation from an accredited program.

Minimum of three years in a marketing/communications role, minimum of two years in a private rentals role, and a minimum of one year in a museum/historic site setting.

Experience overseeing staff.

Experience working as a team to deliver a successful product and/or program.

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
