Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of the job is to work with the forest products industry, federal, state and local government agencies and non-government entities to improve the efficiency, effectiveness and the image of Maryland’s forest products industry. Part of the agency’s mission is to restore, manage and protect the state’s forest land and forested ecosystems, both public and private, to sustain our natural resources. An active, thriving forest products industry is critical to fulfilling that mission.

POSITION DUTIES

The Department of Natural Resources - Forest Service (Salisbury, Wicomico County), is currently accepting applications for a Park Technician II to provide technical and clerical assistance to the Forest Stewardship & Utilization Program.

The main purpose of the job is to improve the efficiency, effectiveness and the image of Maryland’s forest products industry. 

Primary Duties Include: 
  • Conduct annual Timber Production Output (TPO) production output surveys.
  • Verify Forest Products Operator applications for completeness and accuracy, maintain database, issue licenses, respond to complaints.
  • Process Woodland Incentive Fund applications for cost-share and process payment authorizations.
  • Develop resources for recruiting industry investment (e.g., marketing materials, trade booth; attend regional trade shows as funding allows).
  • Visit secondary forest product manufacturers to gather general information on business prospects and challenges.
  • Assist the Master Logger Program to help plan and conduct training sessions.
  • Catalog and maintain database of approved Chesapeake Bay Critical Area Timber Harvest Plans.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.            

Experience: Two years of experience in the skilled maintenance or construction trades, e.g. Electrician, Plumber or experience in the maintenance of a park, forest or wildlife facility.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute education in the field of forestry, wildlife biology or park management at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 credit hours for each year of experience for up to two years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute additional experience at the rate of one year of experience for one year of education up to four years of the required education.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in equipment, facilities, and services classification or equipment, facilities, and services specialty codes in the equipment, facilities, and services field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

2 years of experience working for logging business, sawmill, trucking company or other business within the forest products sector.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated familiarity with day-to-day and cyclical issues of forest products sector
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word
  • Strong communication skills
  • Demonstrated familiarity with and participation with forestry and forest industry trade associations.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

This position is open to current DNR Forestry Employees only. Candidates that do not fall within that category will not be considered.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned dutieswhich require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Some positions in this classification are assigned duties which will require the candidates to be examined by a Physician. After an offer of employment, candidates for such positions will be given a medical examination to certify the ability to perform the essential job functions.

2. Upon permanent appointment, employees in this classification may be required to reside in the county, region, or park to which they are assigned.

3. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require a valid operator license for heavy equipment, such as bulldozers, back-hoes, payloaders or tractors.

4. Employees in this classification may be required to provide a telephone number listed in the agency’s telephone directory or on file with Forest, Park and Wildlife Communications Center in case of emergencies.

5. Employees in this classification may be required to attend training and be certified as a water plant operator.

6. Employees in this classification may be required to lift objects weighing up to 40 or more pounds.
