Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to serve as the Wildlife and Heritage Services migratory game bird habitat biologist. The incumbent works collaboratively and creates, restores, and maintains game bird habitat projects and implements other conservation initiatives on public and private lands throughout Maryland. The incumbent serves as technical resource on matters of migratory game bird habitat for land managers, particularly those with the Wildlife and Heritage Service. The incumbent works with wildlife habitat cost share programs such as the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program. The incumbent provides guidance to the Wildlife and Heritage Service on policies and programs related to waterfowl habitat and represents the Service on Atlantic Flyway committees and projects such as the North American Waterfowl Management Plan.

POSITION DUTIES

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service (WHS) is currently accepting applications for a Migratory Game Bird Habitat Biologist. The incumbent will work collaboratively to create, restore, and maintain game bird habitat projects and implement other conservation initiatives on public and private lands throughout Maryland. The selected candidate will serve as the technical resource on matters of migratory game bird habitat for the Department’s land managers, particularly those with the Wildlife and Heritage Service. Additionally, the candidate will work with other government agencies and non-government conservation organizations to source and coordinate funding and technical expertise to create migratory game bird habitat in suitable locations as well as provide guidance to the Wildlife and Heritage Service on these matters. This is a great opportunity for an enthusiastic candidate who will be directly involved in the site identification, planning, construction, and management/repair of tidal and freshwater wetland and early successional habitats on state, federal and private lands. Additionally, the candidate will participate in research and monitoring activities must be well versed in communicating conservation strategies and objectives to private landowners and government land managers in Maryland. The candidate will work with internal and external permitting agencies, obtain a Pesticide Applicators License from the MD Department of Agriculture and to use a variety of small power equipment, off road vehicles and boats in remote and difficult terrain in the course of conducting their job duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Four years of professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology and two years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management.

Notes: 
1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study from an accredited college or university and two years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management for the required experience. 
2. Candidates may substitute graduate education beyond a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study as described above at the rate of 15 graduate credit hours for one year of the required experience. 
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in wildlife science or one of the closely related fields listed under the Education requirement.
  • Four years of experience collecting and analyzing natural resource-based scientific data, and disseminating results through oral presentations, reports or other publications specifically related to game birds and or game mammals.
  • Two years of experience engaging with the general public, and/or public speaking on topics concerning natural resource issues.
  • Two years of experience creating, managing or restoring migratory game bird habitat preferably utilizing farm bill conservation funding or similar monetary sourcing and design support.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
