Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of a Cemetery Superintendent is to supervise, manage and coordinate the day to day activities of a Maryland State Veterans Cemetery. This includes all aspects of administration/personnel, cemetery operations, facility management, grounds management, equipment maintenance, supply/inventory management, resource management, strategic planning, policy and procedures development, special projects and other duties as assigned. The Superintendent makes sure that the Department’s mission to provide the best services and perpetual care of burial sites is accomplished.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of administrative and supervisory experience in the operation and maintenance of a cemetery, park or forest land.

Notes: 

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience as defined above on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at the rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in general maintenance classifications or cemetery caretaking specialty codes in the general maintenance field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

This recruitment is limited to employees of the Department of Veteran's Affairs.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24 hours a day and may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

SELECTION PROCESS

For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service must be provided prior to hire.

Successful candidates will be ranked as Best Qualified, Better Qualified, or Qualified and placed on the employment (eligible) list for at least one year.  The resulting certified eligible list for this recruitment may be used for similar positions in this or other State agencies.
