The Maryland Department of General Services (DGS) is responsible for almost $1 billion in annual contract administration, 6.3 million square-feet of State-owned facilities, and 4.6 million square-feet of leased space. DGS supports State and local government agencies by providing a full spectrum of design and construction, facilities operations, security, procurement, real estate, and surplus property services.

LOCATION OF POSITION

A position is available within the Office of Facilities Management for the Department of General Services located in Annapolis, Maryland. 

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to operate and maintain boilers, chillers, pumps, motors, valves and piping to include the knowledge of hot and cold water supply sewage systems, sprinkler irrigation systems and controls for the Annapolis State Office Complex.  This position must read blueprints, diagrams and engineering specifications.  As supervisor, will assign, train and review the work of others; recommend the selection, promotion and termination of employees; approves leave and timesheets; and conducts performance evaluations. 

This is an emergency essential position subject to emergency release procedures. Employees in this position must be willing and available for duty at all hours, day or night, and are required to remain or report for duty at all hours as needed to maintain the continuous operation of this agency. 

If you are the selected candidate for this position, you will be required to complete a Pre-Employment Physical, which will assess your ability to safely perform the essential functions of this position.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties for this position include but are not limited to:

 

- Operating and maintain boilers, chillers, pumps, motor, valves and piping.

 

- Provide supervision and direction to employees performing, operating and maintaining equipment.

 

- Conducts safety inspections of the boiler equipment and schedules repairs.

 

- Supervises and assists in the cleaning and repairs of furnaces, boilers, and refrigeration equipment.

 

- Maintains records, schedules meetings, prepares charts, reports and requisitions equipment and supplies.

 

- Prepares and oversees preventative maintenance programs for the Power Plant and cost evaluations for charged jobs.

 

- Other functions that may be required that enables this agency to fulfill its overall government mission which is to maintain all State land and structures for the Facilities Management Division of DGS.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Completion of eighth grade.

Experience:  Five years’ experience in licensed stationary engineering including four years of responsibility assigning, reviewing, and approving the work of others and disciplining, evaluating the performance of and recommending the hiring, firing and promoting of others.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in utilities classifications or mechanical maintenance specialty codes in any combination of maintenance trades on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding all qualifications.   

 

- Possession of a Master Plumber’s license.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in the licensed option must possess and maintain a current Maryland First Grade Stationary Engineer License from the Board of Examining Engineers. 

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SELECTION PROCESS

The examination for this position will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position.  Successful candidates will be placed on the employment eligibility list categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED, or QUALIFIED.  The eligibility list will be valid for one year and may be extended.  The list will be used by the hiring authority to select employees for interviews.  Eligible lists may be used to fill future vacancies of the same classification. 

 

You MUST possess the minimum qualifications before you may be selected for a State job – verification will be completed upon hire.  If you are scheduled to complete an educational or licensing requirement within six months of being placed on the eligibility list, you may participate in the selection process.  Permanent State employees may also complete necessary experience requirements within six months of the date of being placed on an eligibility list.   

 

Please note, selected candidates may be required to complete and successfully pass a State and Federal fingerprint background check prior to being hired.
