POSITION DUTIES

The incumbent will learn how to provide reference services in the Archives Searchroom, interviewing patrons, determining research needs, advising of effective research strategies, ordering materials retrieved from the stacks, pulling and returning collections from storage locations, and monitoring patrons for security and compliance with Archives rules and regulations. These duties are performed under the direct supervision of the Director of Reference. This is an entry level position learning professional archival work providing access to records, a primary component of the mission of the State Archives.

  • Provides reference services in the Archives Searchroom, interviewing patrons, determining research needs, advising of effective research strategies, ordering materials retrieved from the stacks, taking records reproduction orders, and performing records retrieval. Also, monitoring patrons for security and compliance with Archives rules and regulations. 

  • Provides reference assistance to patrons who make requests by telephone, traditional mail and email by conducting basic research, locating, retrieving, copying and refiling archival records and writing response letters. 

  • Will learn and assists with the operation of the lobby registration desk as required when other trained personnel are unavailable

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Four years of experience in professional archival work with public records.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Archivist classifications or Archivist specialty codes in the Library and Archives field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with archival work with public records

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college

Ability to climb ladders for records retrieval

Ability to lift up to 50lbs for records retrieval
