Main Purpose of Job
The Epidemiologist III is an advanced level
position. The purpose of this
position is to provide epidemiological support to the Water Supply Program
(WSP). WSP is responsible for ensuring the safety of drinking water in Maryland
and administers a variety of programs that safeguard public health. These include
the State’s Lead-in-Schools Programs and protection against water-borne
pathogens through implementation of the Safe Drinking Water Act. The
Epidemiologist makes recommendations to management about public health
implications and decisions relating to drinking water. The working conditions involve
exposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings and the use of protective
equipment such as goggles, gloves, mask, etc.
The incumbent in this position will be required to drive a State
vehicle. If you maintain an out-of-state driving license, you must
provide a certified copy of your driving record from the appropriate Motor
Vehicle Administration at the time of appointment. Individuals
must maintain a driver's license with no more than 5 points on their
driving record in order to drive a State vehicle.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A Master’s degree in the field of Public Health from an accredited college or university with a minimum of three graduate courses in Epidemiology and one graduate course in Biostatistics.
Experience: Three years of experience as an Epidemiologist after receipt of the Master’s degree.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute a Doctoral degree in the field of Public Health from an accredited college or university with a minimum of six graduate courses in Epidemiology and three graduate courses in Biostatistics for the required education and experience.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Care Science classifications or Clinical Lab, Medical Scientists, or Bio Medical Lab Officer specialty codes in the health research field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge and/or experience with the Safe Drinking Water Act.
- Familiar and or experience with environmental regulations, guidelines, and policies related to toxic substances.

PERSONAL LEAVE - New State
employees are awarded six (6) personal leave days annually (prorated based on
