Main Purpose of Job

The SLP is responsible for providing skilled speech, language, cognitive, voice, and swallowing therapy to patients on the High Intensity Medical (HIM), Comprehensive Care (CC) Programs and Brain Injury. Patients on HIM may be ventilator dependent, require frequent intervention, rehabilitation, or special isolation, along with any number of diagnoses and co-morbidities. Skilled SLP needs are wide-ranging. In addition, this SLP will be responsible for CC, assessing and treating residents’ acute needs, as well as developing programs designed to optimize residual cognitive and communication skills.


 Provides direct patient services, including diagnostic evaluations, therapy, and family education to facilitate maximum level of functioning. Manages a full caseload independently.

Completes medical record documentation and statistical reports per policy.

Actively participates in the interdisciplinary team process, collaborating with staff, patients, and families. Provides department specific training to new hires and nursing staff. 

Complete required training, education courses and competencies within established timeframes to comply with regulatory requirements.

Participate in continuous quality improvement.


Education:   Set by the licensing requirements of the Maryland State of Board of Audiologists, Hearing Aid Dispensers & Speech-Language Pathologists.

Experience: Five years of experience as a Speech-Language Pathologist or Audiologist.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Speech Pathologist and Audiologist classification or Speech Pathologist or Audiologist specialty codes in the Speech Pathology and Audiology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.


1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license from the Maryland State Board of Audiologists, Hearing Aid Dispensers & Speech-Language Pathologists, 4201 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215.

2. Employees in this classification must renew their license in accordance with Health Occupations Article, Title 2 Audiology or Title 19 Speech-Language Pathology of the Annotated Code of Maryland.

3. Employees in this classification are required to possess a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology.  A copy of the current certificate must accompany the application form.

For education obtained outside the U.S., any job offer will be contingent on the candidate providing an evaluation for equivalency by a foreign credential evaluation service prior to starting employment (and may be requested prior to interview).
