Introduction

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the legal business of the State, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials and institutions of State Government. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown, leads the Office with a key focus on equity, justice, and fairness.  

One of Attorney General Brown’s top priorities is public safety. As such, the OAG is expanding its Criminal Division and is looking for talented, hardworking individuals who are interested in being a part of that expansion, as we create an even bigger and better Criminal Division to collaborate with local, State, and federal partners to help combat violence, organized crime, the opioid epidemic, fraud, corruption, and environmental hazards, and keep Marylanders safe.

Main Purpose of Job

The OAG’s Criminal Division is seeking applicants for a full-time Paralegal II. 

The paralegal will support the work of the Criminal Division’s Environmental and Natural Resources Crimes Unit, and assist in all aspects of managing and organizing investigations and prosecutions, including assisting with the preparation and filing of charging documents, assistance preparing documents and evidence for discovery, creating exhibits and demonstratives for trial presentation, assisting in preparation and filing of legal motions, and providing general administrative support to include intake of written, oral and electronic correspondence; entry of communications into the unit’s database; closing case files; assisting with office reception duties; providing administrative support to the unit’s attorneys and investigators; and otherwise assisting with the day-to-day activities of the unit.

A hybrid remote telework and in-office schedule option is available per applicable policies and procedures  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. 

Experience: Three years of experience as a legal assistant or legal secretary performing legal research or preparing legal documents on behalf of an attorney. 

Notes:
1. Thirty credit hours or a certificate in paralegal studies from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience. 

2. Thirty credit hours from an accredited law school may be substituted for the required experience. 

3. Additional years of experience as stated above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education. 

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in paralegal specialist classifications or paralegal specialist specialty codes in the legal and kindred field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.  


The candidate shall possess excellent written and oral communication skills and analytic ability; and familiarity with a variety of computer applications, specifically the Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, etc.) and Adobe Acrobat. The candidate should be detail oriented, have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and have strong organizational skills.

The ideal candidate will have experience with a variety of computer applications, specifically the Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, etc.) and Adobe Acrobat.

The State also offers a free mass transit benefit for local bus and express bus services.
