Main Purpose of Job

The Director of Communication for the Maryland Department of Health is responsible for the coordination and execution the Department’s communications strategy for all five administrations, including Behavioral Health, Developmental Disabilities, Medicaid, Public Health and Operations.  Job duties include:

  • Directing, reviewing and approving strategic messaging across the State;
  • Directing communication best practices, including the use of the MDH brand and communications policies;
  • Directing, reviewing and approving strategic messaging across the State;
  • Directing development of and creation of all matters of communications materials across the five administrations; and,
  • Supervision of deputy directors and content managers.

Other responsibilities include monitoring meetings with stakeholders, policymakers and advocates; working with MDH administrators and Governor and Lieutenant Governor's staff to help plan events; and, preparation of briefing materials and talking points on issues related to the agency's areas of jurisdiction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Journalism, Public Relations or Communications and six years of professional experience in public relations, communications, or journalism/marketing work.   

Note:   A Master’s degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, Public Administration or Business Administration may be substituted for two years of professional experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have strong writing skills and public speaking ability, computer and video marketing experience, an understanding of how to use digital media effectively, and experience working with the media.

This is a Political Special Appointment position and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.  A resume must accompany your application.
