POSITION DUTIES

The main purpose of this position is to conduct Child Nutrition Program reviews and provide highly specialized technical assistance and consultation as part of an interdisciplinary team that provides a comprehensive assessment, training and program development schematic to build and enhance the nutritional standing of education systems and Sponsoring Agencies of Child Nutrition Programs throughout Maryland.

Position Duties: 

  • Lead and conduct program evaluation and assessment reviews of institutions, sponsoring organizations and local education agencies (LEAs). 
  • Prepare a nutritional assessment and recommendations to improve the nutritional content of meals to enhance student achievement. 
  • Certify and validate the nutrition standards of the LEAs participating in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. 
  • Develop comprehensive Corrective Action Plans for sponsoring organizations and LEAs. 
  • Lead an interdisciplinary team to assess the needs, provide resources, and build the capacity of the participating agencies. 
  • Develop and present technical assistance to participating institutions and LEAs. 
  • Implement high quality professional training sessions for Nutrition Program participants. 
  • Assist with community outreach activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Master’s degree or equivalent 36 credit hours of post baccalaureate course work in Nutrition, Dietetics, Consumer Science, Food Service Management, Institutional Administration, Public Health or a related field. 

Experience: Three (3) years of professional experience in assessing compliance with federal law and regulations or Child Nutrition Programs. 

Note:
  1. Candidates may substitute a Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years of the specified content experience to satisfy the Minimum Qualifications noted above.  
  2. Candidates may substitute a Doctorate Degree and 2 years of the specified content experience to satisfy the Minimum Qualifications noted above.   
  3. The above requirements are set by the Maryland State Department of Education in accordance with Education Article, Section 2-104.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

  • Knowledge of federal laws and regulations governing food service and School and Community Nutrition Programs 
  • Knowledge of food safety, menu planning and food production
  • Experience in assessing programs, identifying problems and determining improvements/solutions 
  • Experience in organizing, developing and conducting training programs

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must consent to a State Police Investigation (fingerprinting) as a routine procedure for all employees with this Agency.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
