POSITION DUTIES

Under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, the Geriatric Nursing Assistant II (GNA II) provides routine daily nursing care to residents and patients and ensures a safe and comfortable environment. This position assists all residents and patients to their optimal level of health and functioning. [The GNA II has additional training above the basic Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training. The focus of the GNA training is on elder care. Certified Nursing Assistant training provides the basic tenants and scope of practice for care provided by both the CNA and GNA.]

Per the Amended Directive and Order Regarding Vaccination (MDH # 2023.04.18.03) issued by the Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health, effective April 18, 2023, staff in all hospitals and residential facilities operated by the Maryland Department of Health or any local health department are required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Staff includes, but is not limited to, regular and contractual employees, contractual staff, volunteers, and other state employees performing any duties at the facility. An individual may request an accommodation by providing appropriate and sufficient documentation for bona fide medical or religious reasons.

  • Sanitizes/sterilizes, distributes, and re-stocks supplies and equipment for all nursing care areas of the facility to provide safe patient and employee use and to decrease the risk of infection
  • Participates with inventory control to maintain an adequate inventory of supplies and equipment by using a par level restocking system and requisitioning storeroom supplies
  • Makes safety part of the job by always being alert to how the work environment could be made safer
  • Knows what a sentinel risk is and how to report it
  • Maintains knowledge of role in emergencies
  • Recognizes, reports and corrects, if possible, any potential or real hazards to prevent injury to patients, visitors, volunteers and staff
  • Maintains knowledge of safe use and handling of hazardous materials, infection control practices, and use of personal protective equipment
  • Uses proper body mechanics and lifting technique
  • Reports equipment malfunctions
  • Completes required training , education courses, and competencies within established timeframes in order to comply with regulatory requirements
  • Participates in continuous quality improvement

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of experience in direct care of patients in a medical setting. 

Notes: 1. Applicants may substitute experience in the direct care of patients for the required education on a year-for-year basis for up to four years of the required education. 

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Hospital Corpsman classifications or Health Care Specialists and Medical Services specialty codes in the nursing field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess and maintain a current certificate as a Nursing Assistant with a Geriatric Nursing Assistant certification designation from the Maryland State Board of Nursing.

2. Employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain current certification of cardiopulmonary resuscitation training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification must successfully complete an in-service training program approved by the hiring facility within the first three months prior to permanent appointment to a position in this classification.

2. Employees must maintain a current listing in the Geriatric Nursing Assistant registry of the Maryland State Board of Nursing.

3. Employees in this classification may be subject to call 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be required to provide the facility with a telephone number at which they can be reached.

4. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
