The Department of Juvenile Services is searching for passionate and compassionate education professionals to join our team at our local government youth education facility’s. As a Teacher, you will play a pivotal role in transforming the lives of youth by providing them with the guidance, support, and education they need to overcome obstacles and unlock their full potential. This position offers a rewarding opportunity to make a profound difference in the lives of vulnerable youth while contributing to the betterment of our community.

 

This recruitment will be use to fill the Library Media Specialist educator positions within the Cheltenham Youth Detention Center. Candidates with secondary education Conditional, Standard Professional, Advance Professional, Advance Professional +30, or Advance Professional +60 Certifications in all endorsement areas are welcome to apply.

 

Candidates who do not have a current active Maryland State Department of Education certification in are required to complete and submit a certification application at www.teach.org; before applying to this recruitment.

Selected candidates are eligible for a sign on bonus up to $3,500.

POSITION DUTIES

1. Foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment where youth feel valued, respected, and motivated to learn.

 

2. Design and deliver engaging lesson plans that cater to the unique needs, learning styles, and abilities of youth, promoting academic growth and personal development.

 

3. Employ a variety of teaching strategies, methodologies, and technologies to enhance student engagement and facilitate effective learning experiences.

 

4. Assess student progress regularly through formative and summative assessments, providing constructive feedback and individualized support to promote academic success.

 

5. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including social workers, counselors, and administrators, to develop holistic plans for student success and address individual challenges effectively.

 

6. Utilize restorative practices and conflict resolution techniques to foster positive relationships among students and encourage a sense of accountability and responsibility.

 

7. Act as a mentor and positive role model, demonstrating empathy, patience, and understanding while promoting positive behavior and responsible decision-making.

 

8. Communicate regularly and effectively with students’ families or guardians, keeping them informed about academic progress, behavior, and any concerns that may arise.

 

9. Stay updated with the latest educational research, best practices, and interventions for working with youth, continually refining teaching strategies and approaches.

 

10. Participate in professional development opportunities, workshops, and training sessions to enhance teaching skills and maintain a high level of professional competence.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Possession of appropriate educational credentials as determined by the Maryland State Board of Education.

Experience: None.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Master's degree from a program at a regionally accredited college or university that would lead to State certification as a Library Media Specialist or a comparable position as determined by the Maryland State Department of Education OR Bachelor's or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university; satisfactorily complete a school library media practicum, one year of full-time teaching experience, or one year of full-time school library media-related experience; and satisfactorily complete a program of 36 semester hours of specific professional education and content post-baccalaureate or graduate credits for certification as a Library Media Specialist with 15 semester hours completed at one institution.

2. Experience with current instructional and research technologies and the ability to integrate these into the library media program and throughout the curriculum.

3. Ability to work effectively with Administrators, staff and students.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Teachers in State operated school programs are required to acquire and maintain certification to teach in the State of Maryland per Education Article, Section 6-101 of the Annotated Code of Maryland and Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) 13A.12.01.03B(2). Applicants recommended for appointment will be required to complete an Authorization and Verification of Credentials. Information on requirements for certification and procedures for application may be obtained from the Maryland State Board of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore, MD 21201-2595.

Additional educational credits beyond the Advanced Professional Certificate must meet the following criteria established by the Institutional Educators Pay Plan Committee in order to qualify for application toward the APC plus 30 level:

Credits must be beyond the education level held at the time the educational requirements for the Advanced Professional Certificate were met and must either relate to the current job responsibilities or be part of an employer approved program of study.

Credits mean semester hours from a regionally accredited college or university or Maryland State Department of Education approved workshops.

No more than one half of any additional credits applied to these criteria may be earned through Maryland Department of Education approved workshops.
