Introduction
This is a Management Service position for the Medical Director, Maryland State Police and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

Main Purpose of Job
POSITION DUTIES
Implement, evaluate and revise health policy through coordination with Human Resources, Assistant Attorney's General, and specialists in their field, which can impact the process of selection or continued employment of DSP personnel.
Perform physical examinations, as well as urgent care to civilian/sworn/candidate personnel and applicants, thus maintaining a standard of fitness necessary to provide quality services to the public.
Facilitate the safe and effective return of sick or injured personnel to the workplace in accordance with policy, practice and mandates by direct evaluations or by communicating with personal care providers regarding accommodation or restrictions.
Provide professional consultation to command staff personnel on physical and psychological findings for appropriate administrative action regarding retention, retirement, fitness for duty or dismissal. Oversight of the FIT, Mental Health Services, Wellness and Tactical Medicine Programs and personnel.
Monitor major health crisis, such as pandemics and other outbreaks. Provide guidance to prevent, reduce exposure and protect the workforce from known outbreaks.
Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A Doctorate a degree in medicine from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Required for certification in an area of medical specialization by an American Medical Association Specialty Board.
Notes:
1. Applicants for this classification must be licensed and currently registered with the Maryland Board of Physicians to practice medicine under Maryland State Law. A copy of the current registration must be attached to the application.
2. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Experience providing 'occupational' medical care/treatment.
2. Experience providing health care/treatment to public safety or military personnel.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
1. Applicants for this classification must be certified by an American Medical Association Specialty Board in an area of medical specialization.
2. Applicants for this classification must be licensed by the Maryland Board of Physicians to practice medicine under Maryland State Law. A copy of the current license must be attached to the application.
3. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
In accordance with Section 2-204 (b) (6) of the Public Safety Article, candidates for positions in this classification will be subject to an initial drug screening, a physical examination and a complete criminal background investigation, to include a polygraph examination, before permanent appointment can be made. A criminal conviction may be grounds for rejection of the candidate.
SELECTION PROCESS
Only candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be considered for this classification. Therefore, it is essential that you provide complete and accurate information on your application. Successful candidates will be placed on the Eligible List categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED or QUALIFIED and remain eligible for consideration for at least one year from the date of examination. The list will be used by the hiring manager to select employees.
EXAMINATION PROCESS
The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position. You may be required to complete a qualifications supplement, or the rating may be based on your application. Report all experience and education that is related to this position. Applicants may be given a physical examination and will be subject to an interview, background investigation, polygraph examination and substance abuse testing.
