Main Purpose of Job

Maryland Public Television’s Education Division is looking for a contractual communication/marketing specialist to make meaningful contributions to the education community, building awareness and engagement about MPT’s instructional resources, professional learning opportunities and other service programs. This proven communication specialist uses strong strategic thinking and writing skills, creative and effective outreach and marketing methods for both in-person and multi-platform activities to reach childcare providers, Pre-K-12 educators and families. Hours of work per week are approximately 24 hours per week.

POSITION DUTIES


  • Develop and implement communication / marketing strategies and plans to increase awareness of MPT education initiatives, MPT education website Thinkport, and use of MPT instructional resources for learning and professional learning courses for teachers in early learning and K-12 education.        
  • Research, write, and edit division communications for a variety of audiences, Including newsletter, brochures, one-sheets, articles, promotional copy, and scripts. Additional writing as needed to support the development of grants and reporting.        
  • Build and maintain distribution lists for various project communication and marketing materials to associated target audiences.         
  • Liaison to internal MPT divisions providing information and communications about Education Initiatives and resources.       
  • Support external communications activities for education projects and partnerships with educational team members.    
  • Perform simple layout / design or oversee activity with a professional agency.         
  • Use of digital tools for tracking project marketing results and website metrics.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s degree in education, communication, marketing or similar relevant field.

Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of experience in marketing or communications field, or related experience. 

Note: Candidates may substitute higher education coursework and five (5) years of marketing or communication experience for the required bachelor degree. 

Additional Notes: For education obtained outside the United States, you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s):
  • Excellent writing skills for a variety of communication and marketing materials.     
  • Proficient in using social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.     
  • Personable with excellent oral communication abilities.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract, and work under 30 hours a week (or less than an average of 130 hours per month) may be eligible for health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.

As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying the full premiums for your medical and prescription, and dental coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. You can also elect to enroll in, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits. 

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12-month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
