Introduction

The Appointments Office is charged with making state government inclusive and representative of the people it serves—from cabinet secretaries to judgeships and the state's 600 boards and commissions. It manages the recruitment for, and administrative and technical aspects of the appointments process, and engages with communities across the state to make sure that, for every appointment, we have the most talented and representative candidate pool possible. 

The Outreach Assistant supports the outreach efforts to execute on this charge–specifically, through stakeholder engagement, constituent relations, communications and executive support.

Main Purpose of Job

The Outreach Assistant supports the outreach efforts to execute on this charge–specifically, through stakeholder engagement, constituent relations, communications–and, specifically, creative content creation–and executive support.

POSITION DUTIES

Responsibilities
  • Support implementation of an engagement plan that leverages stakeholder relations and communications to: 
Expand interest in and access to Maryland board and commission service 
Increase representativeness across Maryland’s boards and commissions 
Ensure engagement of affinity communities across boards and commissions 
Educate the broader community about Maryland’s boards and commissions and the important, who-knew? work they do 
Elevate the profile of the Appointments Office and its work 
  • Lead on daily executive support to the Secretary—briefings, schedule/calendar, communications, etc. 
  • Manage the email account 
  • Leverage website as key communications tool and ensure content is clear, compelling and up-to-date 
  • Lead creation of timely, relevant and engaging content for social media 
  • Provide quality service–and adherence to outreach guidelines–in response to constituent concerns via email and phone calls 
  • Ensure the team advances office-wide core values and messaging in the work 
  • Identify where possible, opportunities to streamline the work and improve process

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to write creative, engaging copy for use across all communications platforms 
  • Acute attention to detail 
  • Strong people skills, customer-oriented 
  • Ability to lead in a fast-paced setting with shifting priorities 
  • Proficiency in key features of the Google Workspace platform including Drive, Gmail, Google Meet, Docs, Sheets, Forms and Slides 
  • Strong content creation skills, including ability to leverage and maximize capability of content creation tools like Canva 
  • A deep commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion 
  • Alignment with the Moore-Miller Administration’s commitment to leaving no one behind
