POSITION DUTIES
The Chief of Staff serves as a Special Assistant to the State Superintendent and will lead and implement executive initiatives, coordinate strategic planning and communication, legislative as well as cross-functional initiatives to ensure the successful implementation of Department’s multi-year strategic plan in support of the execution of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future as well ensuring successful operations of the Department to ensure compliance with federal, state regulations, mandates, and initiatives for the success of all students in the State.
The Chief of Staff represents the
State Superintendent as a liaison to the State Board of Education, legislature,
and executive branches of the government. The position will track key
initiative progress, while leading and executing special projects. This position will provide regular
information and deliverables to help the State Superintendent be more
productive and effective. These include:
strategically assess and frame ideas/concepts, help to prioritize and execute,
facilitate change, organize and prioritize critical issues and required
information to facilitate efficient decision making, as well as support
reporting and analyses.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Six years of experience in educational leadership with expertise in the areas of strategic
planning, cross-functional project management, and initiative implementation in
a prekindergarten through grade 12 setting.
Notes: Candidates may substitute the possession of a
Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to
the position for two years of the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to applicants who possess the
following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific

- Senior level experience in planning and leading expansive, mission-critical projects.
- Experience working
strategically and collaboratively across functions, influencing others to
achieve outcomes.
- Experience in and understanding of prekindergarten through grade 12 structure, management, legislation.
