POSITION DUTIES

The Pretrial Release Investigator Trainee is the entry level of pretrial release investigative work for the Division of Pretrial Detention and Services (DPDS), Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, serving Baltimore City.


  • Learns how to compile, organize, and prepare case files for arrestees
  • Learns rules, regulations, procedures and policies applicable to the State pretrial release program and criminal justice system
  • Accesses the appropriate information systems to obtain criminal histories
  • Verifies all background data
  • Completes a Risk instrument to assess danger to the community or appearance in court
  • Formulates an appropriate recommendation for bail or recognizance based on the investigation
  • Presents the gathered information and proffers the recommendation to the Judge at Bail Review; forwards the information to Records/Classification

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet all minimum (and selective) qualifications to be considered, and to appear on the list of people eligible for hire. Please read all requirements before applying.

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: None.

Note: Candidates may substitute additional investigative experience in law enforcement, court services, parole and probation or pretrial release work on a year-to-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

  • Experience processing data into a criminal justice information system (CJIS).
  • Experience with research and report writing.
  • Willing to accept assignments on any work shift: day, evening or night.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this class may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification will be assigned to one of three shifts in order to maintain 24 hour coverage and may be required to work on weekends and holidays.

Employees in this classification are subject to call-in/ draft during emergencies and staffing shortages.

· Personal Leave - new State employees are awarded six (6) personnel days annually (prorated based on start date)
· Annual Leave - ten (10) days of accumulated annual leave per year
· Sick Leave - fifteen (15) days of accumulated sick leave per year 
· Parental Leave - up to sixty (60) days of paid parental leave upon the birth or adoption of a child 
· Holidays - State employees also celebrate at least twelve (12) holidays per year
